Overview

Developed by Genichi Taguchi in the 1950s, and adopted by NASA and all the automotive companies, Design of Experiments has revolutionized the way a company takes a scientific approach towards learning how their organizations actually work. Traditional experiments consisted of testing dozens of variables at different levels, one factor at a time. The results were sky-high research costs that often made questionable contributions to the organization. The concept of Design of Experiments allowed companies to quickly screen many variables, identify interactions between them, and zero in on relationships that would have remained hidden had they continued with the one factor at a time approach.

This course provides the basic tools, using Microsoft® Excel spread sheets, QI Macros®, or Minitab® to set up and evaluate the results. At the end of this training, the participant should be able to identify problems to be tested, create a test protocol, run the test, and develop relationships that allow error free production. This is a hands on course where participants are encouraged to bring their PCs so they can leave with the tools provided.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the scientific approach to experiments, including statistical sampling issues that relate to experimenting in the "real world"
  • Describe how to design experiments, carry them out and analyze the data they yield
  • Understand the process of designing an experiment including factorial and fractional factorial designs
  • Examine factorial design patterns (e.g. Latin design, etc.) and confounding issues that allow cost reduction, increases efficiency of experimentation, to reveal the essential nature of a process
  • Be able to discuss the advantages of experimental design to those who conduct the experiments as well as those whom the results are reported
  • Use the logic of hypothesis testing, ANOVA, and common cause/special cause evaluations to evaluate experimental data
  • Introduct Taguchi Methods
  • Understand regression analysis and Least Squares techniques, and how to use them
  • Apply DOE using real examples from industry, economics, and social science
  • Be able to apply what you have learned when you return to your company
